New film production studio opens in Didsbury

Jul 2, 2026 | 3:50 PM

Didsbury and the Mountain View Regional Film Office (MVRFO) are celebrating the grand opening of a new film production facility.

West of 22 Productions Inc., which includes a 20-foot green screen and sound stage, cut the ribbon on Canada Day. It is the only facility of its kind in Alberta, outside of Calgary and Edmonton, giving productions more reason to stay local instead of having to relocate crews.

According to the MVRFO, the opening reflects years of work building the region’s reputation as a serious filming destination.

The MVRFO itself is a partnership between the Town of Didsbury, the Town of Sundre, and Mountain View County.

Acting as a concierge for productions, the office says, they can connect filmmakers with locations and permitting support.

Now, with West of 22 Productions in the mix, sound stage and green screen capacity, it will help productions retain Alberta’s 30 per cent rural film and television tax incentive without leaving the region, officials say.

“With its proximity to Calgary, stunning locations, and access to production infrastructure, the Mountain View Region is one of the best places to film in western Canada, and West of 22 Productions is an essential part of this,’ says Jon Allan, co-founder, ambassador, and economic development officer for the MVRFO.

“We recognize them for their foresight, dedication to community, and love for the art form. We can’t wait to continue working with them for years to come.”

The region has already hosted productions including Under the Banner of Heaven, Fargo, Die My Love, The Order, and Wynonna Earp.
