Red Deer RCMP dished out 117 traffic violations in May

Jun 9, 2026 | 1:58 PM

Red Deer RCMP handed out 117 charges under the Traffic Safety Act in May.

Three drivers or occupants were found to be in a moving vehicle without a seatbelt.

Another 64 were issued for speeding, two for careless driving, plus 16 moving and 62 non-moving vehicle infractions.

Five tickets were issued for distracted driving.

Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services Unit says its members continue to see drivers using cell phones and other devices while driving or stopped at red lights and stop signs.

Police remind drivers that using devices while driving is not only dangerous, but it can also result in a $390 fine.

Thirteen of the charges noted above were due to infractions within a construction zone.

Construction zone safety tips:

  • Obey all posted speed limits and signage, as reduced speeds are in place to protect workers and drivers.
  • Watch for workers, equipment and sudden changes in traffic flow, including lane shifts or closures.
  • Follow directions from flag persons and temporary traffic signals at all times.
  • Maintain a safe following distance to allow for unexpected stops or slow-moving traffic.
  • Avoid distractions and remain fully focused while travelling through work zones.
