Gain another draft pick

Rebels swap first round picks with Regina in upcoming CHL Import Draft

The Red Deer Rebels have completed a trade with the Regina Pats in a deal that involves draft picks.

The Rebels announced they’ve swapped first-round picks with the Pats at the upcoming Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.

The Rebels also received a third-round pick in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft via the Everett Silvertips.

The order for the CHL Import Draft on June 30 has not been set yet, but Rebels director of broadcasts and media Troy Gillard confirmed in a social media post that Red Deer has moved back in the draft as a result of the trade.

The Pats and Rebels finished seventh and eighth in the WHL’s Eastern Conference standings, so the two teams could potentially be picking close together.

Last season, the Rebels rostered three import players, including forward Matej Mikes, and defencemen Jiri Kamas and Matus Lisy.

Rebels owner Brent Sutter reported after the season that Mikes will not return to the team as a result of multiple knee surgeries. Meanwhile, Kamas and Lisy are both set to return.

“Mikes is going back and will need major knee surgery again, and that’ll be two surgeries he’s had on the same knee. It’s just going to be too high-risk for us. He’s an awesome kid, and it’s just unfortunate.”

Whoever the Rebels end up selecting in the CHL Import Draft could potentially end up being on the roster on opening night.
