Red Deer Emergency Services respond to garage fire in Pines neighbourhood

The cause of a structure fire that took place in the Pines neighbourhood in the early morning hours on Tuesday is under investigation.

Red Deer Emergency Services acting chief Curtis Schaefer said crews responded just after midnight for a report of an outside fire that was upgraded to a structure fire before crews arrived.

Emergency Services had four fire apparatuses, a command unit, and an EMS unit respond to the blaze.

Once on scene, firefighters found the fire in a detached garage at the rear of the property and took approximately 40 minutes to extinguish it. Crews remained on scene for an additional hour and a half to ensure all the hotspots were out.

Schaefer said the blaze caused significant damage to the garage and the contents inside, resulting in a loss, as the structure is irreparable at this time. A dollar figure for the loss has not yet been determined.

However, there were no injuries.

Despite rumours on social media that it was a wildfire, the chief explained the fire had spread to a few trees near the garage, but crews were able to knock them down quickly before they spread any further.

“There was no spread of the fire to any neighbouring properties or trees. It was all contained within the property of origin,” Schaefer added.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
