Blackfalds Bulldogs goalie up for BCHL Rookie of the Year

Apr 10, 2026 | 1:57 PM

Carson Mertz, a goaltender for the BCHL’s Blackfalds Bulldogs, has been named a finalist for the league’s top rookie award for the 2025-26 season.

Mertz is going up against Chilliwack Chiefs forward Boris Borin, and Vernon Vipers forward Dmitrii Kubantsev, both of whom are Russian.

Per the BCHL:

“Mertz led all rookies with a .910 save percentage on the season, good enough for second overall among all BCHL goaltenders, while his 2.34 goals-against average was most among eligible rookies and third overall in the league. The 18-year-old finished 2025-26 with a 21-7-0 record in 29 appearances, leading all rookies in wins.

“Mertz went on a six-game winning streak late in the season, giving up more than two goals on just one occasion during that stretch and earning his lone shutout of the season, an 18-save blanking of the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Feb. 13.”

Meanwhile, Borin, a 17-year-old, led all eligible rookies with 57 points in 42 games. Kubantsev reached 53 points in 47 contests, also as a 17-year-old.

Finalists were determined after a vote among the 20 BCHL head coaches and general managers. Winners will be announced between Rounds 2 and 3 of the playoffs.

The Bruce Allison Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year in the BCHL has previously gone to such names as Alex Newhook, Danton Heinen, Jamie Benn, Kyle Turris, Beau Bennett, Gilbert Brule, and Brendan Morrison.

Mertz and the Bulldogs currently find themselves down 3-1 in the opening round against Sherwood Park. Game 5 is back in Blackfalds on April 10, with a 7 p.m. puck drop from the Eagle Builders Centre.

Game 6 is in Sherwood Park on April 12, if necessary; and Game 7 is in Blackfalds on April 14, if necessary.
