Ongoing bridge construction

Portion of Gaetz Avenue to be closed for four weeks beginning this Sunday

Apr 9, 2026 | 4:58 PM

The City of Red Deer announced it will close a portion of Gaetz Avenue effective this Sunday, April 12, for approximately four weeks.

The closure is part of the ongoing bridge construction and will reopen on May 8.

During the closure, Gaetz Avenue will be closed to all southbound traffic between 45 Street and 43rd Street.

It is recommended by the city that southbound drivers divert early to Taylor Drive via Ross Street to avoid traffic delays along the 45 Street detour.

“This closure is required to safely complete critical work, including demolition of the existing structure and installation of a temporary bridge,” as stated in a press release. “The existing bridge structure is in poor structural condition and must be demolished at once. It cannot be demolished in stages without risking public safety. Completing work within a full closure also allows construction to proceed as efficiently and quickly as possible, ultimately reducing construction timelines.”

Access to local businesses within the work site will continue to be maintained throughout the closure:

  • Access to the Creekside Professional Centre (4320 50 Avenue) will be temporarily available via 43 Street. Gaetz Avenue south of Waskasoo Creek will be temporarily converted to two-way traffic.
  • Access to the businesses north of Waskasoo Creek (near 45 Street) can continue to do so as usual; however, you will need to exit through a back lane or alternative street.
  • Detours and alternative access route signage will be in place to help.
