Ponoka Pride Society dissolves, citing limited resources
A pride organization in central Alberta says it is closing after five years due to limited resources, inconsistent community engagement and lack of government support.
The Ponoka Pride Society says in a social media post that while the need for their advocacy work for 2SLGBTQ+ in rural areas remains, there is no structural support to continue.
It says it has chosen to donate their remaining finances — about $1,400 — to Camp Fyrefly, a leadership retreat for 2SLGBTQ+ youth.
The organization says people in their community are facing unprecedented levels of discrimination, and that their work also requires accountability from the public and those in power.
