Town of Ponoka invites citizens to apply for roles on Municipal Policing Committee

The Town of Ponoka is calling on residents to apply for volunteer positions on the newly formed Municipal Policing Committee.

Citizens have until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, to apply. Applications can be found online at Ponoka.ca. Paper copies can also be picked up at the town office in Ponoka.

To be considered for the committee, applicants must be at least 18 years old and passionate about public service. Applicants must also be available to attend four to eight meetings throughout the year, pass an enhanced security check, and take an oath as set out in the Police Act. They also cannot be employed by any police or justice-related agency.

Those who are chosen for the committee will be appointed for two and three-year terms.

The Municipal Policing Committee was created to comply with amendments made to the Alberta Police Act and regulations.

The committee will replace the former Police Advisory Committee and will work together with the Ponoka town council, the Ponoka RCMP Detachment Officer in charge, and the Town of Ponoka administration to:

• Oversee the administration of the municipal police service agreement.
• Represent the interests and concerns of the public and of the Town Council to the Officer in Charge.
• Develop a yearly plan of priorities and strategies for municipal policing.
• Develop a community safety plan, including a plan for collaboration between the community and community agencies.
• Assist in the selection of the Officer in Charge.
• Report annually, or on request to the Minister, on the implementation of and updates to programs and services to achieve the priorities of the police service.
