Vote on disestablishment of BIA and DBA now underway

Today, Business Improvement Area (BIA) levy payers will vote on the potential disestablishment of the BIA and the Downtown Business Association.

Until 8 p.m., voters can head to the boardroom at Servus Arena to cast their vote.

If a majority votes in favour of the disestablishment, the city council must move forward with adopting the bylaw; however, if voters are opposed, the first reading of the bylaw will be rescinded, and council won’t be allowed to pass another BIA disestablishment bylaw for two years. The BIA would also remain in place.

Once all the ballots have been counted and verified, the results of the vote will be announced on Monday through a media release on the City of Red Deer website. Each BIA taxpayer is eligible for one vote.

In January, Red Deer city council passed the first reading of the bylaw to initiate the process, and this vote is a required step in the legislated process.
