RDP Athletics recap: March 6-8

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team won the first two games in the best-of-five ACAC Women’s Hockey Championship. The RDP Kings Hockey team advanced to the ACAC Men’s Hockey Championship. The Queens Indoor Track team earned silver and the Kings solidified bronze at the ACAC Championships. The RDP Dance team earned several medals at the True West Dance Competition.

Hockey

Queens at Rustlers | Friday, March 6

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team defeated the Lakeland College Rustlers 2-1 in overtime in the best-of-five ACAC Women’s Hockey Championship.

Mia McGregor (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) scored during regulation time. Camryn Ward recorded the winning goal in overtime. Goaltender Tora Ward made 33 saves (0.971).

Queens vs. Rustlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, March 7

The RDP Queens downed the Rustlers 2-1 in overtime to jump ahead 2-0 in the series.

Camryn Ward (Bachelor of Kinesiology) scored in the second period. McGregor had the overtime winner. Saskatoon’s Tora Ward stopped 33 shots (0.971).

Kings vs. Voyageurs | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, March 6

The RDP Kings Hockey team defeated the Portage College Voyageurs 8-2 in game one of the best-of-three ACAC Men’s Hockey Semi-final series.

Both Shayne Tibbles and Holden Knights scored twice. Mason Bueckert, Dawson Leroux, Tanner Sklaruk and Carter Cormier added singles. St. Albert’s Evan Fradette made 20 saves in the Kings’ net (0.909).

Kings vs. Voyageurs | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, March 7

The Kings earned a 6-3 decision over the Voyageurs, advancing to the ACAC Men’s Hockey Championship.

Alex Bernauer (Business Diploma) recorded a hat trick. Bueckert, Sklaruk and Knights added goals.

Indoor Track

ACAC Indoor Track Championships | Kinsmen Sports Centre | March 7-8

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Indoor Track team earned silver in Edmonton. The RDP Kings sealed bronze. There were several outstanding individual performances and medals.

Eiley Morrison (42.56) earned gold in the women’s 300 m final. Julianna Chipiuk (11:09.23) won gold, and Georgia Sawchuk (11:22.52) solidified silver in the women’s 3,000 m final.

The RDP Queens 4 x 200 m relay team (Asia Perry, Jennifer Acainyah, Kammy Park and Morrison) sealed bronze (1:53.07). Japhet Kipkosgei (9:08.89) won silver in the men’s 3,000 m final.

Dance

Queens | True West Dance Competition | Calgary | March 7-8

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Dance team earned eight gold and three silver medals at the True West Dance Competition in Calgary.

Elise Arens, Aunika Heise, Meghan Walker, Siena Wald and Katarina Spiridakis earned gold medals.

In addition, the RDP Queens Jazz, Contemporary, and Hip Hop teams won gold. Christina Darby, the duo of Katarina Spiridakis and Meghan Walker, and the Queens Trio team all solidified silver. Macy Obara, RDP Choreography Coach, was also recognized with the True West Top Award.
