Alberta First Nations chiefs gather at legislature to denounce separatism

Mar 10, 2026 | 10:43 AM

More than a dozen First Nations chiefs and elders from across Alberta gathered at the provincial legislature to call on the government to denounce the brewing separatist movement.

Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Chief Sheldon Sunshine says Treaty rights and Indigenous people are being minimized.

This comes after chiefs from across the province unanimously voted to call on members of the legislature to hold a non-confidence vote against Premier Danielle Smith’s government.

Opposition N-D-P Leader Naheed Nenshi (nah-HEHD’ NEHN’-shee) had put forward a motion to have such a vote, but Smith’s United Conservatives called it a political stunt and shut it down.
