RDP Athletics recap: Feb. 27 – March 1

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team earned gold at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship. The RDP Queens Volleyball team finished fifth at the ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship. The Queens Hockey team won its semi-final against the NAIT Ooks. The RDP Dance team received several awards at the Crown Quest Intercollegiate Dance Competition.

Here is a summary of the recent results:

Volleyball

ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship | U of A Augustana | February 27-March 1

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team ranked fifth at the ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship in Camrose.

In their opening match, the Queens were edged by the Lakeland College Rustlers in five sets (21-25, 18-25, 25-8, 25-19 and 13-15). Rachel Perry (Business Diploma) led the Queens with 13 kills.

The RDP Queens swept the SAIT Trojans in their second match (29-27, 25-22 and 25-20). Red Deer’s Nadia McKeage contributed 12 kills and eight digs for the RDP Queens.

On Sunday, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens defeated The King’s University Eagles in four sets (26-24, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-17), placing fifth in the league. Both Rachel Perry and Nadia McKeage accumulated 15 kills for the Polytechnic.

ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship | RDP | February 26-28

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings won gold at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship held at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. This victory was the RDP Kings’ 22nd ACAC gold medal in program history.

In their opening match, the Kings swept the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (25-20, 25-18 and 25-16). Red Deer’s Colby Nemeth led both squads with 14 kills. He added six digs, two service aces and one stuff block in the win.

On Friday, the RDP Kings earned a three-set decision over the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks (25-13, 25-18 and 25-22). Owen Langberg (Instrumentation and Automation Engineering Technology Diploma) had eight kills for the Kings.

In the gold medal match, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings defeated the Keyano College Huskies in four sets (26-24, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-22). Nemeth totalled a game-high 25 kills.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will participate in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship held from March 11-14 at NAIT.

Dance

Crown Quest Intercollegiate Dance Competition | RDP Arts Centre Main Stage | Sat., Feb. 28

At the Crown Quest Intercollegiate Dance Competition, the Red Deer Polytechnic Hip Hop, Jazz and Contemporary Dance teams received High Gold Awards.

The Polytechnic’s Small Group Jazz team earned a Platinum Award. The Small Jazz Group also placed first overall in their category, advancing to the Overall Finals and capturing the Stage Presence Group Award.

RDP solo, duet and trio dancers also earned an impressive mix of High Gold and Platinum awards.

Hockey

Queens vs. Ooks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 27

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team defeated the NAIT Ooks 2-1 in game one of the best-ofthree ACAC Women’s Hockey Semi-Final.

Natalie Tychkowsky (Bachelor of Education) and Hayley Kolosky (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) scored for the Queens.

Queens at Ooks | Saturday, February 28

The RDP Queens downed the Ooks 3-2 to win their semi-final and advance to the ACAC Championship. Rylee Mepham, a third-year forward from Ardrossan, Alberta, scored twice for RDP. Jailyn Bablitz, a fifth-year forward from Valleyview, Alberta, added a goal for the Queens.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens will now challenge the Lakeland College Rustlers for ACAC gold.
