Feb 27, 2026 | 3:17 PM

It’s nearly two-and-a-half years in jail for a Stettler man charged following an incident in downtown Red Deer in 2024.

Donald Jack Bosma, 57, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of Justice on Feb. 11, 2026, to 912 days behind bars, including a lifetime firearm prohibition.

He was sentenced after being convicted on one count each of possession of a prohibited firearm, and possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized.

Bosma was previously scheduled for trial in Red Deer on Feb. 23, 2026, and originally on Aug. 13, 2025.

Bosma was initially charged with multiple offences after allegedly trying to flee police and being in possession of multiple weapons.

It was on Nov. 15, 2024, at 7:43 p.m., when the Red Deer RCMP Downtown Patrol Unit observed a vehicle that displayed a stolen license plate in the area of Gaetz Avenue and 50 Street.

After investigating, police discovered a passenger in the vehicle who had outstanding warrants. Mounties say he was placed under arrest but attempted to flee in the process and was apprehended once again.

RCMP then searched the individual and found a loaded handgun and a knife.

As a result, the suspect was originally charged with the following offences:

  • Weapon possession contrary to order x2
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon
  • Carrying concealed weapon
  • Dangerous operation of motor vehicle
  • Resist peace officer
  • Possession of firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized
  • Possession of restricted or prohibited firearm with ammo without license
  • Flight from Peace Officer
  • Unsafe storage of firearm

Bosma was remanded into custody after being taken before a Justice of the Peace on Nov. 20, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

Red Deer RCMP say they remain committed to addressing illegal activity in the downtown area and ensuring the safety of all community members. Mounties say proactive patrols and enforcement efforts are part of ongoing initiatives to foster a safe and welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
