Red Deer Public School students take part in annual Ski Loppet

Feb 24, 2026 | 2:29 PM

Red Deer Schools’ annual Ski Loppet returned on Tuesday afternoon.

Nearly 500 students from Grades 3-12 strapped on their cross-country skis in the yearly tradition to take on the trails at River Bend Golf and Recreation Area.

Colin Christensen, coordinator of the Red Deer Public Schools Ski Loppet, said the event is all about getting outside, having fun, and challenging students physically.

“It’s also about trying something new for some people or pushing yourself if you’re a skier that’s been around for a while,” he said.

Christensen, who also skied in this event as a young boy, said it’s been around for at least 40 years.

The students had an option to ski either three kilometres or five kilometres, and it wasn’t just about who finished first.

It’s about outdoor adventure, physical activity, and community spirit.

“It’s a good way to get some exercise, but bring in some competition too. Some kids are out here just to enjoy themselves, enjoy the day, but some kids are out here because they want to win.”
