Innisfail fire chief applauds actions of neighbours in house fire earlier this month

The Innisfail Fire Department says the cause of a fire at a former day home is unknown but believed to be accidental.

On Feb. 12 at 2:40 p.m., Fire Chief Jayme Hendrick said 11 firefighters responded to a structure fire at a residence in Innisfail that previously operated as a day home.

The single occupant of the house, who is the owner, was asleep downstairs when his neighbours saw the fire and called 911.

“The fire started on the deck and was burning the exterior of the house. It was starting to breach a couple of windows that failed, and into the interior of the house,” Hendrick said, adding there was water and smoke damage to the interior of the house.

There was also some considerable fire and burning damage to the exterior of the house and the roof. No injuries were reported.

The incident prompted the RCMP to alert the public to refrain from attending the scene on 53rd Ave. to allow emergency services to complete their work.

The fire chief applauded the neighbours’ actions, who not only woke up the homeowner and called 911, but also were attempting to put out the fire with a garden hose and snow.

“They were a big help in controlling the fire until we arrived,” he said. “We were on scene from the call to having water on the fire in under nine minutes.”
