Rebels Poul Andersen scores OT winner to take down Hurricanes

The Red Deer Rebels viewed Sunday’s contest against the Lethbridge Hurricanes as a must-win.

With 15 games remaining, central Alberta’s team is in the thick of a playoff race that’s bound to come down to the wire.

As a result, the Rebels secured a 4-3 victory in overtime against the Hurricanes in front of 5,553 fans at the Centrium.

Head coach Marc Habscheid said his team played a solid first period, but in the second, the Hurricanes made some adjustments that put Red Deer on their heels a bit.

The Rebels’ bench boss owned his mistake, adding it was on him to counter those adjustments quicker.

“When we adjusted for the third period, we were much better, and I thought we carried quite a bit of the third,” he said. “It was just one of those games that seemed like they just hung around, and it was a bit of a trap game. Those are dangerous, and I give Lethbridge credit; they played well and hung around. They’re probably not going to make the playoffs, but they competed hard, and this was a big game for us. We had to have this, and in the end, we found a way.”

Heading into the afternoon matchup, the Rebels trailed the Regina Pats and Moose Jaw Warriors, who were tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference.

With the win, Red Deer is now in sole possession of seventh place with 46 points.

Red Deer earned the victory thanks to an extra-frame marker from forward Poul Andersen, who was fresh off scoring the overtime winner on Friday night.

Andersen fired in the rebound on the power play with 2:11 to go in the period.

Habscheid said Andersen has a heckuva shot.

“He’s got a gift; he can really shoot the puck. [Assistant coach Clayton Jardine] does a good job with the power play, and [Assistant coach Mike Egener] does a good job with the PK. It’s up to the coaches to find spots for these guys, and Andersen is a gifted goal scorer.”

In the first period, the Rebels got on the board first, just over two minutes into the game. Forward Matej Mikes skated into the slot and snapped a shot into the back of the net.

Nearly seven minutes later, Rebels defenceman Matus Lisy extended their lead after his shot on net redirected off a skate and in.

However, with under four minutes left in the first, the Hurricanes got on the board with a shot from Grady Pichette. His shot went uncontested after Rebels defenceman Aleksey Chichkin broke his stick seconds before.

In the second period, Hurricanes forward Kayden Longley scored the lone goal of the frame to tie the game at two.

In the third period, the Rebels retook the lead with 18:35 to go when Patrick Sopiarz tipped a shot from Lisy past the goaltender.

The Rebels came up with two massive penalty kills, including a four-minute double minor for high-sticking.

Despite that, the Hurricanes tied the game 3-3 with 4:13 remaining to send it to overtime.

This set up the late-game heroics by Andersen that propelled the Rebels to victory. Netminder Matthew Kondro was fantastic in net once again with 29 saves on 32 shots. On the other end of the ice, Hurricanes goalie Koen Cleaver made 45 saves on 49 shots.

Next up, the Rebels will head to Medicine Hat to take on the Tigers at 2 p.m. at Co-op Place on Monday.
