Olds Grizzly named AJHL Rookie of the Week

More accolades have come in this week for a member of the Olds Grizzlys.

Forward Ryder Riedel has been named the Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week, for the fifth time this season.

The Didsbury, Alta, native who led all first-year players with four points from Feb. 2-8, earned six points in his last three games with three consecutive multi-point performances.

On Feb. 3, the 2007-born forward was awarded as the Bunge AJHL Player of the Game with two assists in an 8-2 road loss to the Canmore Eagles. The team charged back, however, with a 4-1 win over the Drayton Valley Thunder on Feb. 8. Riedel scored the winning goal and added an assist in the victory.

Ryder Riedel is fourth in AJHL rookie scoring with 30 points (10G, 20A) in 28 games.

Elsewhere, the Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week is Fort McMurray Oil Barons Captain Drew Freer after recording five points (3G, 2A) and two Bunge AJHL Player of the Game selections last week.

The 2005-born forward scored two goals in a 7-3 win on Feb. 7 and assisted on the game tying goal in a 4-3 shootout win the next day. The second-year Oil Baron has 29 points in 44 games played, including 17 goals and 12 assists.

Meantime, Tristan Payne of the Drumheller Dragons is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week with three points (2G, 1A) in a big road win for the team. The Dragons blueliner led his team to a 6-3 victory over the league-leading Whitecourt Wolverines on Feb. 6 with his third three-point game of the season.

Payne (2006) is second in team scoring with 31 points (6G, 25A) in 44 games and tied for fourth among all AJHL defencemen.
