JUNO Award-winning Rosa Barocca returns to Red Deer for high-energy “Too Hot to Handel”

Central Albertans can soon experience Handel’s iconic “Water Music” performed on authentic period instruments this month.

The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra (RDSO) is thrilled to welcome back the JUNO Award-winning ensemble Rosa Barocca for a dramatic journey into the Baroque era.

The concert, titled “Too Hot to Handel,” takes place on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026, at the Red Deer Polytechnic Arts Centre.

Known for their virtuosic performances on authentic period instruments, organizers say Rosa Barocca brings an international roster of specialists to Red Deer to showcase the energy and elegance of the 18th century.

Officials say the program features masterpieces by Vivaldi and Zelenka, culminating in one of the most famous works in classical music history: Handel’s Water Music.

Originally composed in 1717 for King George I’s grand royal cruise down the River Thames, organizers say Water Music has remained a global audience favorite for over 300 years.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rosa Barocca back to the RDSO stage,” says RDSO Executive Director, Matthew Whitfield. “Our collaboration is always a highlight of the season, and Too Hot to Handel will be a spectacular continuation of this annual artistic partnership.”

Officials say this performance continues the RDSO’s 39th season, offering central Alberta audiences the prestige of a JUNO-winning ensemble without the “big-city” commute or price tag.
