Multiple Family Day events and activities planned across central Alberta

Central Albertans looking for something to do this Family Day on Monday, Feb. 16, will have plenty to choose from.

Below is a list of events in communities across central Alberta:

Red Deer

Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery

Celebrate Family Day from noon to 4:30 p.m. at a free drop-in event at the gallery (4525 47A Avenue).

While there, there will be games for kids and adults, family-friendly activities, live local entertainment (musician Dean Ray from 1-3 p.m.), and light snacks and drinks. Those in attendance will also get to explore current exhibits.

Family Day Snow Fest

From 1 to 4 p.m., residents are invited to attend Family Day Snow Fest, a free event located at three different locations in Waskasoo Park.

Every time you participate in an activity, your family is entered to win a grand prize. Participate in all the activities and earn up to three entries

Locations & Activities:

  • Kerry Wood Nature Centre – snowshoeing
  • Bower Ponds – skating
  • River Bend – cross-country skiing

Red Deer Rebels

Meantime, the Red Deer Rebels will take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Centrium on Sunday, Feb. 15. Puck drop is at 4 p.m. and will include a United Way Sockey Toss and Paint the Ice postgame party.

The Sockey Toss fundraiser is a United Way initiative to collect warm socks for those in need in central Alberta. Attendees can bring their own or pick up a pair from community partners at the doors, then throw them on the ice during the second intermission.

Sunnybrook Farm Museum

Sunnybrook Farm Museum will host a Family Snow Day event on Monday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Children and adults alike can enjoy sliding down the hill by the pond (bring your own toboggan), sleigh rides with two teams of draft horses, an outdoor marshmallow roast over a fire pit, and for a final warm-up move inside the historic Hanna Log House for some hot chocolate and cookies.

Admission is by donation.

Blackfalds

Winterfest

Celebrate Family Day by attending Winterfest in Blackfalds from noon to 3 p.m. at the Eagle Builders Centre.

Enjoy a free family skate in arena one, a Blackfalds Fire Department barbecue, bingo, a movie, and more.

Those who attend the Blackfalds Bulldogs game later that day will have the opportunity to skate with the players following the game’s conclusion.

Ponoka

Family Day events in Ponoka include a free public swim at the Ponoka Aquaplex from 1 to 5 p.m. and free public skating at the Ponoka Arena Complex from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Citizens can also enjoy a skate at the outdoor rink next to the Ponoka Arena Complex. The rink is available in the daytime and in the evening as the outdoor lights operate between 5 and 10 p.m.

At the public skate at the Aquaplex, those who want to help support the Ponoka Food Bank can bring donations of non-perishable food items.

There will also be free Family Day activities at the Calnash Ag Event Centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. These include an indoor bouncy castle, an open obstacle course ride in the indoor arena (horses not provided) and hot chocolate.

Lacombe

The City of Lacombe will host a free public skate at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Stettler

The Town of Stettler will hold its annual Family Day Fun Day at the Stettler Recreation Centre, which will include the following activities:

  • Pancake breakfast 9-11 a.m.
  • Family swim 10-11:30 a.m.
  • Giants Candy Land 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Home Sweet Home kids theatre show 12-1:30 p.m.
  • Hot dog lunch 1-2:30 p.m.
  • Family swim 1-2:30 p.m.
  • Photo booth 1-3 p.m.
  • Public skating and shinny 1-3 p.m.

Innisfail

The Town of Innisfail and local service clubs will offer a variety of events throughout the community for Family Day:

  • Innisfail Twin Arena – Noon – 3 p.m. free public skate, open to all ages and skill levels. As well, the Innisfail Kinsmen will hold a bonfire and barbecue at the Arenas, as well as a warm-up station and wagon rides.
  • Helping Hand Fund 3-on-3 Family Day hockey tournament – 10 am start at the Innisfail Twin Arena.
  • All day outdoor skating at the boarded rink located on the northwest side of the Innisfail Twin Arena.
  • Innisfail Ski Hill – 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Sylvan Lake

The Ice Dragon Boat Festival is still on from Feb. 14-15, despite cancelling the dragon boat races this year due to poor ice conditions.

On Feb. 14, horse and wagon rides will be available from 3 to 7 p.m. departing from Festival Street. Also that day, Chinese lion and dragon dancers will take part at 3:30 p.m. on Festival Street.

On Feb. 15, kids and adults can try ice carving from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with ice carving demonstrations set for 1 to 3 p.m. A fireworks show will wrap up the day at 7 p.m.

More events and activities will be added as they become available.

Provincial

The Legislative Assembly of Alberta will hold its annual Family Day celebration in the Legislature Building, the Legislature pedway, and the QEII Building Centre from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Queen Elizabeth II Building will feature local family-friendly interactive entertainment throughout the day, including magic shows, circus acts and musical and dance performances.
