Rebels falls to Royals 6-3 as B.C. road trip continues

The Red Deer Rebels lost a fifth-straight game, this time 6-3, as they continued a six-game road trip Saturday night in Victoria.

The Rebels met the Royals for the only meeting of the two this season in what was the third of six on their venture out west through the B.C. Division.

The loss from the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena also leaves Red Deer technically ahead of, but tied on points, with Regina for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Scoring summary

The Rebels were in control of this game early, thanks to early goals from Owen DeWitt (2nd) and Poul Andersen (15th).

DeWitt scored at the 3:23 mark of the first, and Andersen potted another shortly thereafter, at 4:54.

But at 14:32 of the opening frame, the home team got on the board with a goal from Caleb Matthews (8th).

It was 2-1 Red Deer after 20 minutes.

Just 4:43 into the second, Roan Woodward (24th) tied it for Victoria, and then Woodward (25th) scored again at 10:42 of the middle stanza to give his team the lead.

Before the period was out, Ashton Brown (10th) had made it 4-2 Royals at 17:13, but then Jake Missura (1st) scored for Red Deer with one second on the clock.

It was 4-3 Victoria through 40.

Woodward (26th) completed the hat trick a mere 58 seconds into the third period to make it 5-3; then Heath Nelson (17th) absolutely sealed the deal at 5:33 of the third.

Final score: 6-3 Royals.

Peyton Shore (4-10-0-1) made 27 saves on 33 shots faced for Red Deer. Ethan Eskit (16-12-5-3) made 25 saves in the win.

Both teams were 0/3 on the power play.

The Rebels resume their road trip through B.C. on Sunday when they face the Vancouver Giants (18-27-1-2), who are last in the Western Conference. Puck drop is at 5 p.m. MT on 106.7 REWIND Radio.

From there, Red Deer heads to Prince George to face the Cougars (29-17-2-0) on Tuesday, Feb. 3 (8 p.m. MT). PG is currently third in the West.
