Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 states opposition to Bill 14 and Alberta independence
The Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 has joined Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, the Blackfoot Confederacy, and the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation in their legal proceedings against the Government of Alberta over Bill 14.
The Confederacy, which includes the Four Nations of Maskwacis – Ermineskin Cree Nation, Samson Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe, and Montana First Nation, released a statement on Thursday stating they’re united in rejecting the petition to hold a referendum on Alberta independence.
They also reject the idea of separation, calling it illegal and dangerous.
The Confederacy added that to protect the treaties, they intervened along with other Treaty Nations in the Court of King’s Bench. However, they say, the UCP government changed the rules with Bill 14 to make sure a vote could still happen.
