Move up the standings

Rebels shut out Wheat Kings for second straight win

Jan 7, 2026 | 9:01 PM

For just the third time this season, the Red Deer Rebels won consecutive games with a 4-0 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings.

The road win comes four days after the Rebels beat the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-3 at the Centrium on Saturday.

A big reason for their second straight triumph was the play of rookie goaltender Peyton Shore, who recorded a 35-save shutout in his home province of Manitoba. On the flip side, the Rebels piled on the pressure with 42 shots.

With the win, the Rebels move into eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 12-20-2-2 record. They also trail the seventh-place Moose Jaw Warriors by just four points.

The Rebels struck first with 12:05 left in the opening period after they played with a ton of energy to begin the contest.

Defenceman Matus Lisy fired a shot on net after the Rebels won the faceoff in the offensive zone. His shot redirected off a player in front and trickled over the line for Lisy’s third tally of the season.

In the second period, the Rebels had multiple high-quality scoring chances, including a breakaway opportunity by Kalder Varga, but were unable to extend their lead until a late goal by Ty Coupland.

The 18-year-old beat the goaltender on the backhand following a toe drag move around the Wheat Kings defender with 5:34 left in the frame.

In the third period, Varga scored his second as a member of the Rebels since he was traded to the club last week.

He fired in the rebound on the offensive rush following a shot from Cole Temple.

And with 4:18 to go, captain Talon Brigley delivered the dagger after he gathered the loose puck on the offensive rush and beat the netminder under his pad.

Next up for the Rebels, they head to Regina on Friday to take on the Pats at 6 p.m., followed by the Broncos in Swift Current on Saturday.
