Olds Grizzlys trade captain to SJHL, acquire rights to Montana twins

Jan 6, 2026 | 2:29 PM

Change is afoot with the Olds Grizzlys, who’ve made a pair of trades.

Last place in the league at 9-21-2-1 as of Jan. 6, the Grizzlys have shipped out captain Hunter Motley to the SJHL’s Kindersley Klippers.

Motley, 20, was 12th on the team in scoring, with two goals and seven assists in 33 games.

The Czar, Alberta native spent the first two seasons of his AJHL career with the Whitecourt Wolverines, then began a third there, but joined the Grizzlys after just five games.

In return for Motley, the Grizzlys receive the rights to Helena, Montana twins Camden and Braden Cunningham, plus a player development fee.

The Cunninghams, who are 19, are currently playing with the Idaho Falls Spud Kings in the NCDC, and it’s not yet confirmed if they’ll be joining the Grizzlys. They are also dual citizens of the U.S. and Canada.

Camden has seven goals and six assists in 24 games, while Braden has five and nine in 26 games. They both played with Kindersley last season.

They both won the NA3HL championship in 2023-24 with the Helena Bighorns, with Braden being named to the first all-star team and all-tournament team. That season, Camden had 202 penalty minutes in 39 regular season games with Helena.

In a separate trade, the Grizzlys acquired Cochrane native Noah Kelly from the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. The 17-year-old forward has three goals and three assists in 24 games this season.

Going the other way are the CJHL playing rights to 19-year-old forward Brodie Hankel.

Hankel played with Portland in the WHL last season, contributing zero points in 32 games. Hankel has spent the current season with the Spruce Grove Saints of the BCHL, which is no longer part of the CJHL.

He played 16 games over two seasons (23-24, 24-25) with the Grizzlys, notching five points.

Lastly, the Grizzlys say Cole Prelusky, a 17-year-old goaltender, has joined the roster.

The Calgary-born netminder most recently was with the Brooks Bandits of the BCHL, but didn’t play. He did play one game this season with the KIJHL’s Golden Rockets, and one game last year with the Olds Grizzlys as an AP, which he lost.

He spent the bulk of last season with the Calgary IHA U18 Prep squad, garnering a record of 11-5-2, with a 2.35 GAA and .920 SV% with three shutouts.

The CJHL trade deadline is Jan. 10, so it’s possible more trades are on the way as the Grizzlys try to right the ship.

The Grizzlys are currently on a four-game homestand, but lost the opener to Drumheller 6-2 on Sunday.

They host Devon (12-16-1-1) Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. from the Olds Sportsplex, then Canmore (17-13-1-0) comes to town Jan. 10 for a 6 p.m. start, and Camrose (17-12-2-0) visits Jan. 16 at 3 p.m.
