“South” hangs on in barnburner of a Senior Bowl
The 35th Annual Senior Bowl High School All-Star Game for graduating Grade 12’s in Alberta was a thriller that featured pretty much every type of scoring that could happen in a football game and went right down to the wire.
Both teams took a while to get going initially until Nathan Watson from Joanne Cardinal-Schubert in Calgary opened the scoring for the South with a 26 yard fieldgoal. That was followed quickly by a blocked punt and scoop and score by the South’s Malik Robbins from Holy Trinity Academy in Okotoks to make it 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw both defenses stand tall, including a defensive stand for the South at their one yard line as the North failed to score in three attempts. The South followed that up with a 85 yard drive that culminated with a 28 yard Watson field goal to go ahead 13-0. However, just before the half, Lorenzo Monus from Beaumont connected on a 33 yard fieldgoal to put the North on the board and leave the score at halftime 13-3 for the South.
The second half saw the awakening of the North offense led by the gutty performance of quarterback Jordan Marchand from Salisbury in Sherwood Park who came back from being injured in the first half. However, it was the South that struck early with a 33 yard field goal from Matias Piza from George McDougall in Airdrie making it 16-3. The North then received a safety on an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone to make it 16-5 at the end of the third.
