Alberta’s mental health and addictions minister says overdose stats declining, but stats suggest otherwise
How the fight to save people in Red Deer from opioid-related overdoses is going, seems to be a matter of perspective.
According to the Alberta government’s Substance Use Surveillance System, EMS responses to opioid-related events in Red Deer were required 29 times from January to March 2025.
From April to June, there were 78; there were 71 from July to September; and from October until the week of Dec. 8, there were 90. That’s a total of 268 through 49 weeks, or 94 per cent of the year.
Notably, April 1 was the first day Red Deer’s overdose prevention site was closed, following its shutdown by the provincial government after several years of operation.
