4th annual Chauncey Classic hockey game for mental health returns Jan. 17

Jan 5, 2026 | 2:31 PM

The fourth annual Chauncey Classic, in memory of Sean Corrigal, returns to Red Deer later this month.

Corrigal, who was 36, sadly lost his life to suicide in January 2022. He was known affectionately as ‘Chauncey.’

“This is a very important fundraiser as our mental health has become very important. People need to know that they are not alone. There is a ton of help out there,” says Norma White, Sean’s mom.

“My son Sean Corrigal thought he had no one to talk to, and nowhere to turn. He was loved by so many, and it shows at these games and events. This event has gotten bigger each year, and it is open to all ages.”

The Chauncey Classic is set for Jan. 17 at the Oriole Park outdoor rink.

It starts with a family skate from 12-2:30, so attendees are invited to bring their chairs, blankets, and propane firepits (no wood pits) to camp out for the afternoon. There will be snacks and beverages, including adult beverages, at the concession. There will also be face-painting.

The game will begin at about 3 p.m.

To register as a player, it costs $25 on-site, and it’s cash only. Teams will be picked by throwing sticks into a pile.

Following the game, participants and supporters are invited to dinner at Leah’s Bar and Grill starting at 5:30. There will be a silent auction, 50/50, live music, karaoke, and a photo booth.

Proceeds from the game and auction will support Alberta-based Mental Health Foundation, who will have a representative on-hand all day.

Over its first three years, the Chauncey Classic has raised just about $20,000.
