Dec 31, 2025 | 1:07 PM

Red Deer’s Maurice Collard has been named as one of 86 lawyers to receive the distinguished honour of being appointed to King’s Counsel.

Collard is a criminal defence lawyer and owner of Advocate Law – Criminal Trial Lawyers, a firm located in Red Deer.

According to his bio on advocatelawyers.ca, Collard is an experienced, accomplished, and well-respected lawyer who has successfully defended some of central Alberta’s most high-profile cases.

He began his career as a criminal defence lawyer in Red Deer and became the longest-serving active crown prosecutor in central Alberta.

He is based out of the Red Deer office and can represent people across the province.

The provincial government says each appointee represents regions across the province, and applications were assessed on individual merit and considered equally.

The applications were reviewed by a committee with representatives from the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, the Alberta Court of Appeal, and the Court of King’s Bench.

“The King’s Counsel designation is a longstanding mark of excellence in our legal community,” said Mickey Amery, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. “These appointees set the standard for integrity, leadership and public service—qualities that strengthen trust in Alberta’s justice system and inspire others in the profession.”

To be eligible for the King’s Counsel designation, each appointee must have at least 10 years at the bar and a minimum of five years of practising law in Alberta.

The provincial government asked for applications for King’s Counsel on Sept. 2 with the deadline set for Sept. 23.
