Canada Post offers winter safety tips for residents and delivery agents

Dec 19, 2025 | 2:55 PM

Officials with Canada Post in Red Deer say they are fully prepared to support customers and businesses during the busiest season and deliver for Canadians this holiday.

Canada Post says mail and parcels are moving as expected, pickups are underway, and workers are processing and delivering new items.

Canada Post wants to remind residents that winter elements pose a particular safety risk to their employees and others. As a result, they note a few elements that can pose hazards for delivery agents as they carry parcels and letter mail to a mailbox or doorstep:

  • The freeze and thaw from downspouts and eavestroughs making sidewalks and driveways slippery, especially with a fresh snow fall covering the surface.
  • Exhaust from vehicles warming up can make the driveway icy and hidden when the vehicle leaves.
  • Holiday decorations on railings impeding delivery agents from using the railings for balance and safety.
  • Icicles forming on roofs from the freeze and thaw cycle could fall on a delivery agent or on the walkway making it slippery.

These conditions are why Canada Post is reminding homeowners and businesses to help them deliver letters and parcels safely by keeping a clear and safe path to their home or business. With everyone’s support, Canada Post says it can help avoid an injury that can happen in just seconds.

Canada Post offers some tips to help keep people safe, and prevent slips, trips and falls for everyone:

  • Remove snow and ice from your walkways, driveway, and around your mailbox.
  • De-ice your stairs, entrance, and the path to your mailbox, using sand or salt.
  • Keep your stairs, handrails, and mailbox free of obstructions, and in good repair.
  • Turn on outdoor lighting to keep pathways and stairs visible.
  • When driving – especially in neighbourhoods – be mindful of delivery agents as they deliver letters and parcels.
