Red Deer’s Madi Phillips has been named as one of 25 athletes to crack Freestyle Alberta’s provincial team for the 2025-26 season.

The provincial squad is split into two teams, one for moguls and the other for park and pipe.

Phillips is a part of the park and pipe team that features 17 slopestyle and halfpipe skiers from across Alberta.

Working with the Calgary Freeriderz and RT Freeski clubs and coaches, athletes follow individualized, year-round training plans designed to support progression toward the NextGen national team. These high-performance athletes are also in the Learn to Compete and Train to Compete stages of LTAD, with long-term ambitions of representing Canada as members of Freestyle Canada’s national team.

Meantime, the mogul team has eight athletes and one coach who train year-round as a camp-based program semi-centralized in Red Deer.

“The calibre of our Alberta provincial team is incredibly high — it’s one of the best displays of talent and grit from all the clubs our athletes come from,” said Jeremy Cooper, Freestyle Alberta Sport Director, in a media release. “These skiers represent the pinnacle of the sport within our province, pushing hard to reach the national team level in their respective disciplines.”

Phillips, 15, has been skiing since the age of four after her dad introduced her to the sport, according to her bio on the Freestyle Alberta website.

“I fell in love with freestyle at age eight—the creativity, challenge, and thrill of the halfpipe hooked me instantly,” as written in her bio. “My dad, coaches Rex and Jack, and teammates push me to chase big goals, inspired by athletes like Zoe Atkin and Sarah Burke. I love the feeling of progress—landing new tricks, going bigger, and expressing myself through skiing.”

Canyon Ski Resort is where it all started for Phillips, who’s accomplished big things in the sport at an early age, including back-to-back junior national wins, placing third at the Canada Cup, and ninth at the Calgary FIS NorAm.

“Outside of skiing, I enjoy golf, hanging out with friends, and studying science, which helps me think about skiing more analytically,” she added. “What makes me unique is my dedication—I’m committed to becoming the best athlete I can be while balancing school, training, and life. I have big goals, and I’m excited to keep progressing and see how far this journey takes me.”

The season kicks off with the 2026 Alberta Winter Games Qualifier at Canyon on December 19-21, followed by the 2026 FIS Snow Rodeo Halfpipe World Cup event at Winsport from December 27 to January 4.
