Blackfalds opposed to proposed provincial electoral boundary changes

Dec 11, 2025 | 12:30 PM

Blackfalds town council isn’t so sure about wanting to see the municipality’s lumped into a much larger provincial constituency, as proposed by the Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission.

Albertans, municipalities and other stakeholders have until Dec. 19 to give feedback on the proposed changes.

As it stands, Blackfalds is in a constituency with Lacombe and Ponoka, which they like due to those communities being existing collaborators. An administrative review did note, however, that the current boundary leaves limited flexibility for growth.

Looking at the proposed new boundaries, the constituency would be stretched way out west to include Rocky Mountain House, whereas the current western boundary of the constituency goes through Gull Lake — about 77 km closer.

To the north, it would no longer include Ponoka if changed as proposed.

Said review notes that positively, Blackfalds would still share the same MLA with Lacombe and Lacombe County, and it would see improved population equity. However, it would mean a much larger geographical area, take more time to build a relationship with the MLA, and split existing economic and social networks.

Kim Isaak, town CAO, says the biggest concern is the socio-economic difficulties the boundary change risks.

In summary, she says the town is opposed to the proposed change.

The town has requested to do a presentation during a virtual town hall with the boundaries commission on Jan. 15.

In the meantime, council has directed administration to submit the town’s concerns to the commission by the Dec. 19 deadline.
