Oil Kings edge Rebels 4-1 in Edmonton

Dec 5, 2025 | 9:53 PM

The Red Deer Rebels were hoping to win their third straight game on Friday night, but the Edmonton Oil Kings had other plans.

As a result, the Oil Kings defeated the Rebels 4-1 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Andrew O’Neill and Landon Hanson scored two goals each for the Oil Kings, and Rebels captain Talon Brigley scored the lone goal for Red Deer.

Red Deer played a good chunk of the game shorthanded after awarding the Oil Kings with seven power plays. However, Red Deer’s penalty kill stood strong, holding their opponents scoreless on the man advantage. Red Deer was also held scoreless on four power plays of their own.

The Oil Kings got on the board first with a goal from Hanson, who found the back of the net nearly five minutes into the game.

His 11th goal of the season, which was scored from a sharp angle, was assisted by Max Curran.

The Rebels found the equalizer with 5:08 to go in the second period, scored by captain Talon Brigley while shorthanded. The tying goal was the Rebels’ first shorthanded goal of the 2025-26 campaign.

It all started when Red Deer dumped the puck into Edmonton’s zone, which took a big bounce off the end boards. Brigley pounced on the loose puck and then beat the netminder with a shot over his left shoulder.

However, the celebration was short-lived as the Oil Kings retook the lead 35 seconds later off a one-timer in the slot by O’Neill.

In the third period, Edmonton took a 3-1 lead with eight minutes remaining with another goal from Hanson. His second of the night came on a rebound opportunity in front of the net. Goaltender Peyton Shore didn’t stand a chance after he was run into by one of his own players, creating an open net for Hanson.

Red Deer pulled the goalie late in the frame in an effort to get back into the game, but O’Neill potted his second of the game to seal the deal.

Between the pipes, Shore made 25 saves on 28 shots and Oil Kings goalie Parker Snell made 24 saves on 25 shots.

Next up for the Rebels, they’ll host the Prince Albert Raiders at 6 p.m. at the Centrium on Saturday for the annual Toque and Teddy Bear Toss game.
