Canadian athletes, or the ones with four legs, fared pretty well on night one of the 2025 National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Best of them all, according to Pro Rodeo Canada, was the Wayne Vold Rodeo bronc Renegade, a saddle bronc horse raised on the Eckville, Alberta Wyzykoski ranch.

Renegade carried Stetson Wright to a highlight reel 90 point score for a whopping $36,668.

Not far back, Kade Bruno teamed up with another Canadian horse, Big Stone Rodeo’s Gone Fishing for a $21,8982 third place cheque.

In the bareback event, Legend Rodeo’s Ramblin Man, based in Taber, combined with Victor, Idaho cowboy Cooper Cooke for an outstanding 88.5 to win the round.

Tie-down roping saw two more Canadian-owned horses lead their competitors to cash.

Logan Bird, based in Nanton, Alberta, saw his horse Peso combine with Texan Joel Harris for second place; then Tyler Popescul (Glenworth, Sask.) had has horse Lincoln take California’s Brushton Minton to fifth.

Meantime, Provost, Alberta steer wrestler Scott Guenthner got his sicth NFR appearance off to a solid start with a fifth place 4.7 second run.

Finally, just one of the four Canadian bronc riders in the field, four-time world champ Zeke Thurston, was able to pad his bank account, riding an Oklahoma-based horse to sixth place.
