Red Deer Arts Council assumes operation of Scott Block Theatre and Event Venue

Nov 30, 2025 | 8:00 AM

The Red Deer Arts Council has announced it will officially assume the lease and operational management of The Scott Block Theatre, effective Dec. 1, 2025.

Officials say this transition represents a significant and forward-looking step for the organization, taking place at a time when municipal funding reductions pose serious challenges to arts programming across the community.

Despite this uncertainty, and while formal appeals of the recent Community Culture Development Fund decisions are underway, officials note the Board of Directors have determined that embracing this opportunity was both a strategic and necessary move to support ongoing cultural activity in Red Deer.

According to the organization, the ability to generate new revenue, support local artists, and ensure a stable home for creative work aligns directly with the Council’s mission and longterm vision for the arts sector.

With the support of Artifact Properties, the owner of the historic Scott Block building, and with sincere gratitude for the guidance provided by Creative Twist Inc., who officials say have managed the space for the past three years, the Arts Council says it is poised to lead the venue into a new era.

“As we assume stewardship of the Scott Block Theatre, we do so with deep respect for its legacy and immense excitement for its future,” says Suzanne Hermary, Executive Director, in a press release. “This venue has long been a cornerstone of arts and culture in Red Deer, including within our own organization’s history, and we are committed to ensuring it remains a dynamic, welcoming, and well-supported space for our community.”

As operator, the Red Deer Arts Council says it will focus on:

  • Expanding programming and performance opportunities
  • Increasing accessibility for local artists and arts groups
  • Fostering a welcoming space for performance, creativity, and collaboration
  • Strengthening community use of the historic downtown space

The organization says further details regarding upcoming programming and rental opportunities will be shared in the months ahead.

The Scott Block Theatre’s next stage begins Dec. 1, 2025. The Red Deer Arts Council invites the community to celebrate this new chapter together.
