Important Survey

Central Alberta arts audience research

Nov 29, 2025 | 8:00 AM

The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG) is inviting the community to take part in what they say is an important research survey.

As a permanent, public, arts, culture, and heritage institution that exists in service to society, officials at the MAG say they deeply value community input, thoughts, and ideas, especially in formulating strategies.

With the support of the Rozsa Foundation and the Community Foundation of Central Alberta, the MAG says it is seeking to create meaningful benchmarks and improve understanding of local audience expectations and experiential interests.

To do so, officials say the MAG’s study aims to establish a profile of current and potential local arts audiences and to evaluate the behaviours of those audiences. The results of this study are expected to guide the MAG in finding new ways to enhance visitor experiences, connect with broader audiences, and continue sharing stories that inspire creativity, curiosity, and connection across the community.

Officials say the MAG’s study is specific to central Alberta, with emphasis being placed on engaging Red Deerians and members of the MAG in particular, intending to complement and build upon the recent Spotlight on Arts Audiences research that was completed in Alberta, across six waves, over the course of five years.

“We are genuinely curious about what will truly help build a sustainable, vibrant, and thriving local creative economy,” shares Chandra Kastern, Executive Director, in a press release. “I believe that locally, our sector is at a bit of a crossroads; our costs of operating are outpacing funding sources and to be responsible stewards, we need to be able to make good moves that actually count, which means that those moves need to be grounded in evidence that is directly derived from our local community.”

MAG officials say insights and information gleaned from this initiative will be shared with the broader art and culture community to encourage the use of current, location relevant, data in shaping the strategic development of the local creative economy.
