Red Deer to host 2029 Men’s Senior AAA Baseball National Championship

Nov 20, 2025 | 11:04 AM

Baseball Canada announced on Wednesday that Red Deer will host the 2029 Men’s Senior AAA National Championship.

This week, Baseball Canada announced several host sites for the upcoming national championships, including Red Deer, which is set for Aug. 23-26, 2029.

These decisions were made during the Baseball Canada Fall Convention in Winnipeg.

Red Deer Riggers manager Jaret Chatwood said they’re excited for the opportunity.

“After the success we’ve had from the last one, I think everyone’s looking forward to doing it again. We know some things we want to improve and change. We’re looking forward to having an even better event than last time,” Chatwood said.

The Red Deer Riggers senior AAA baseball club hosted the tournament in 2023, but failed to earn a medal. Team Quebec went on to win the title in a walk-off 6-5 victory over Saskatchewan.

Chatwood explained that discussions have taken place over the last several years since they hosted the tournament to do so once again. Everyone involved was pleased with the job the Riggers and the organizing committee did in hosting the national tournament. They applied to host in 2027 and 2028 before being awarded the 2029 tournament.

“It was so much fun to be able to host. We didn’t perform the way we wanted to on the field, so I think this time around we are going to really look at putting together the best possible team to make the playoff rounds at least and hopefully some of the championship rounds,” he said.

“Given the success off the field, we’re really happy with it and how everything played out. I think building on those two things is what we’re going to look forward to over the next couple of years.”

With that in mind, the Riggers, who are a not-for-profit baseball organization, are looking for corporate sponsorship and partners to help with the tournament.

Chatwood explained there is a significant financial burden that comes with hosting an event of this stature. Baseball Canada provides some funding but overall, hotels, bus rides, field costs, and things like that are left for the Riggers to cover.

He estimated that in 2023 it costed the team approximately $75,000 to $100,000 to host the event.

Not only will they be fundraising for nationals in 2029, but since the Riggers won the 2025 Sunburst League championship, they are also fundraising to go to nationals in August 2026 in New Brunswick.

“There’s a lot of fundraising and a lot of things that go into it to make it financially feasible,” he said. “We’re going to be going here pretty hard with fundraising. It’s kind of a double edged sword because you want to go to nationals every year… We are fundraising to go to nationals this year but we’re also going to be fundraising to host as well. Being a not-for-profit and trying to keep fees low for everyone, it’s quite the battle.”
