The Red Deer Rebels lost a heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

In overtime, a Rebels defenceman lost his edge and fell to the ice, turning the puck over to Warriors forward Ethan Semeniuk, who scored on a breakaway with 1:25 left.

The goal propelled the Warriors to a 3-2 victory over the Rebels at Temple Gardens Centre in Saskatchewan.

Forwards Samuel Drancak and Jaxon Fuder found the back of the net for Red Deer and goaltender Matthew Kondro made 31 saves on 34 shots.

Drancak kicked off the scoring when he redirected a point shot from defenceman Nate Yellowaga over 40 seconds into the game in Moose Jaw.

His shot made it past former Rebels goaltender Chase Wutzke, who was traded to the Warriors just over a week ago. Wutzke also had a stand-out performance with 34 saves against his former team.

The Warriors answered later in the period with a tally from forward Lynden Lakovic, who leads the Western Hockey League with 17 goals. His power play marker was assisted by Connor Schmidt with just under eight minutes left in the opening frame.

Nearly three minutes into the second period, the Warriors took their first lead of the game off the stick of Casey Brown.

However, Red Deer responded late in the middle frame with a power play goal from Fuder. He tied the game at two following a snipe from the right circle with 3:41 left.

After a scoreless third period, the Warriors got the upper hand in overtime.

Next up, the Rebels will return to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 11, in Brandon, Man., where they’ll face the Wheat Kings at 1:30 p.m. mountain time at Assiniboine Credit Union Place.
