Ponoka County woman cleared of charge related to alleged horse theft

A charge related to the alleged theft of a horse, against a woman from Ponoka County, has been dropped.

RCMP shared in August that a charge of ‘Theft of Cattle over $5,000’ had been laid against 28-year-old Katrina Doiron.

Mounties have confirmed to rdnewsNOW that the charge is withdrawn.

In an interview with rdnewsNOW, Doiron says the matter is now being handled in civil court, as she seeks to recoup money she claims is owed to her by another horse owner whom she used to work for.

Doiron explains she’s owed money for the sale of a horse.

The civil claim is seeking $9,100, she shares, plus damages related to alleged criminal trespass, malicious prosecution, defamation, and other costs.

In the meantime, Doiron has also launched a petition calling for changes to Alberta’s Animal Keepers Act.

“The petition is extremely important to me as situations like this can be discouraging to trainers, and our industry heavily relies on the up-and-coming generation of horse trainers, which includes my two oldest daughters, who have also been negatively affected by this situation and also put many hours of work into [the other horse-owner’s] horses,” she explains.

“A very simple change made to the Animal Keepers Act to cover horse trainers in the same way boarding stables are covered would add a huge layer of protection to us trainers. Many jurisdictions, such as Ontario and Oklahoma already practice this in their [legislation].”

She says the change would eliminate the high costs and time invested to recuperate funds when a client refuses to pay.

Alberta Justice says there is currently no date set for future hearings of Doiron’s civil case.
