Blue-green algae advisories lifted throughout central Alberta

Nov 5, 2025 | 1:59 PM

Seven blue-green algae advisories throughout central Alberta (Central Zone of AHS) have been lifted by Alberta Health Services.

This is due to the recent weather which has cooled lake and reservoir water temperatures to such an extent that cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) presents a low health risk.

Effective immediately, the following sites no longer have advisories:

ASTOTIN LAKE in Elk Island National Park

BATTLE LAKE in the County of Wetaskiwin

BLACK NUGGET LAKE in Beaver County

BUCK LAKE in the County of Wetaskiwin

PIGEON LAKE in the County of Wetaskiwin

PINE LAKE in Red Deer County

WIZARD LAKE in the County of Wetaskiwin

“As always, visitors and residents are reminded to never drink or cook with untreated water directly from any recreational body of water at any time,” AHS writes.

“Note that boiling water will not remove the toxins produced by cyanobacteria. An alternate source of drinking water should also be provided for pets and livestock any time cyanobacteria may be of concern.”
