Red Deer lawyer to return home as newly appointed justice

Kimberley Goddard, KC, is returning to central Alberta as a justice of the Alberta Court of Justice.

Goddard, who grew up in Red Deer, will take on the new role effective Nov. 17.

She earned her bachelor of laws degree from the University of Alberta in 1999, and began here career as an articling student in Edmonton.

A year later, she began working with the Edmonton Crown Prosecutor’s Office as a frontline Crown Prosecutor responsible for handling some of the most serious and significant cases in the Edmonton area and became Assistant Chief Crown Prosecutor in 2011.

We look forward to the contributions she will make in ensuring timely and meaningful access to justice across the province.”

After 2011, Goddard joined the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service Strategic and Business Services Branch as project counsel in 2018 before becoming executive director in 2019. Since 2020, she has been serving as the assistant deputy minister for the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service.

According to the official website for Alberta Commissionaires, Goddard is also a former Naval Reserve Officer, and has recently sat on the Commissionaires board for Northern Alberta.

Goddard’s appointment is the 34th by the Government of Alberta in the last 2.5 years.

To be appointed, one must have at least 10 years at the bar.
