Recount overturns election result for Red Deer Catholic trustee

Oct 25, 2025 | 9:02 PM

Following a recount, one election result in Red Deer has been altered.

Initial results showed Emily Huber had secured the fifth and final Red Deer ward trustee spot within Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.

The gap between her and incumbent Murray Hollman was just one vote — 1,037 to 1,036.

On Friday, the City of Red Deer announced that a recount application from Hollman had been approved, and that the recount would take place Saturday.

Recount results, which are final, now show Hollman with 1,037 votes, and Huber with 1,034.

“Recounts are a normal part of any election, especially when results are this close,” said Jessica Robinson, Returning Officer.

This year, as mandated by the Province of Alberta, the City of Red Deer used a hand-counting process supported by manual data entry. This process includes multiple checks, reviews, and verification steps to ensure results are accurate and thoroughly validated.

Hollman was first elected to the board of trustees in 2013.

Also elected to Red Deer Catholic’s board of trustees for Red Deer ward are Chris Andrew (2,020 votes), Brenda MacDonald (1,354), Martin Reed (1,082), and Cynthia Leyson (1,050). Voted in for Highway 11 ward is Catherine Bouchard, and for QEII ward, voted in was Edward Wiper.

The recount took place as per the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA).
