Sophie B. Hawkins, Paula Cole to perform at Red Deer’s Memorial Centre this Sunday

If you’re looking to be thrown back to the 90s, look no further than the show being put on this Sunday in Red Deer by well-renowned singer/songwriters Paula Cole and Sophie B. Hawkins.

Their concert kicks off at 7:30 p.m. from the Red Deer Memorial Centre, and tickets can be bought on Showpass.

Whether it’s the Grammy-winning Cole’s ‘I Don’t Want to Wait’ or ‘Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?’ or be it the Grammy-nominated Hawkins’ ‘Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover’ or ‘As I Lay Me Down,’ it’s bound to be a memorable show featuring two trailblazing artists.

“I think Paula and I love each other as artists, first of all. We’re in the same age range, and we both grew up in the northeast — we have a lot of ancestors from the Boston area, and we have a lot in common,” Hawkins said in an interview this week with rdnewsNOW.

“As far as chemistry, we’re very different, we’re like magnets, we complement each other. We love talking and supporting each other. We also love our mutual musicians; I mean, we have a van of both of our musicians and everyone gets along.”

So for those who’ve bought a ticket, or are currently considering it, what can they expect?

“First of all, they’re going to get a double whammy because it’s me and Paula. I’ll go on first, and do all the hits they want to hear. I’m going to do a few new songs that people have been responding to. We do a really energetic show,” says Hawkins, noting reviews online have been very positive.

“It’s been such an honest, fun and energetic tour and I really bring the audience into my shows.”

Hawkins, who added that another highlight of their travels has been meeting up with Sarah McLachlan and seeing her perform, just released new music earlier this month, with her album entitled ‘Whaler Re-Emerging.’ Hawkins is also working on a memoir.

Cole’s most recent album, entitled ‘Lo,’ was released in 2024.

A Lilith Fair performer, Cole has been nominated for a Grammy seven times, and won once for Best New Artist in 1998 (nominated along with Fiona Apple, Erykah Badu and Hanson). The same year, she became the first woman to be nominated without a male collaborator for Producer of the Year.

Hawkins was nominated in the same category in 1993, along with Arrested Development, Bille Ray Cyrus, Kris Kross, and Jon Secada. That year, Hawkins did win the Kraftrille des Jahres (Power Groove of the Year) at the German RSH Gold Awards, and went on to receive the Most Performed Song award at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards for ‘As I Lay Me Down’ in 1996.
