Rebels trade for Red Deer product Kohen Lodge

Oct 24, 2025 | 11:07 AM

Hometown kid Kohen Lodge is on his way to Red Deer following a trade between the Rebels and the Saskatoon Blades on Friday.

In addition, they will also receive a conditional fifth-round pick from the Blades in the 2028 WHL Prospects Draft.

Heading the other way, the Rebels are sending 19-year-old defenceman Derek Thurston to the Blades.

Lodge, a Red Deer native, is the son of Rebels skills and development coach Erik Lodge. He was selected by the Blades in round nine, 235th overall, in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.

The 17-year-old has played 36 games in Saskatoon over two seasons and in that time has four goals and three assists for seven points.

This season, he’s played eight games with the Blades and recorded one assist.

During the 2024-25 campaign, he suited up for the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs, where he had 36 points in 21 games and was named to the AEHL U18 First All-Star Team.

Meantime, Thurston was the Rebels’ defenceman of the year last season after he led the team with a plus-nine plus-minus rating.

He was selected by the Rebels in the sixth round, 112 overall, in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft. Over 119 games in a Rebels uniform, Thurston accumulated nine goals and 24 points.
