Rebels trade for 20-year-old defenceman Aleksey Chichkin

The Red Deer Rebels have acquired 20-year-old defenceman Aleksey Chichkin from the Prince George Cougars.

In exchange, Red Deer gave up a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft.

The product of Vancouver, B.C. has played 130 WHL games with three different teams, including the Cougars, Regina Pats, and Calgary Hitmen.

Over that time, the 6’5″ left-shooting defenceman notched six goals, 22 points, and 171 penalty minutes.

Last year, he had five goals and 11 points in 60 games split between the Pats and Cougars, which also included 74 penalty minutes.

After he went undrafted, Chichkin entered the WHL after he was signed by the Hitmen in March 2023.

With the trade, the Rebels now have all three 20-year-old roster spots full with Chichkin and forwards Arjun Bawa and Talon Brigley. Forward Brett Calhoon, 20, was placed on waivers early this season.

The Rebels also completed a trade with the Saskatoon Blades earlier today, acquiring Red Deer product Kohen Lodge and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2028 for defenceman Derek Thurston.
