A Red Deer man has been charged following an alleged public assault that took place last week outside of a business in Parkland Mall.

Red Deer’s Cameron Dowkes, 43, has been charged with assault, uttering threats, and wilful promotion of hatred following an incident on Oct. 15.

Police say the alleged incident took place that day at approximately 4:20 p.m. when they responded to an assault in progress outside the business.

Witnesses reported that a man had approached and punched another man while also yelling racial comments at him. Police say the two men did not know one another.

“Red Deer RCMP take all incidents of violence seriously, including those motivated by hate or bias. RCMP are committed to ensuring residents feel safe and can live in communities free from discrimination or fear,” as written by the RCMP in a media release.

Dowkes was remanded into custody and made his first court appearance at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on Oct. 22.

A trial has now been set for Jan. 12, 2026.
