Team Jigger hosting para hockey tournament in Red Deer this weekend

Oct 20, 2025 | 2:05 PM

The Team Jigger Sledge Hockey Program is once again underway, and it will host the Alberta Para Hockey Tournament in Red Deer Oct. 25 and 26.

Played at the G.H. Dawe Centre, the tournament will feature teams from around Alberta, including junior and seniors squads under the Team Jigger banner.

Saturday runs 9-5 and Sunday 9-3.

If unfamiliar, Team Jigger operates an accessible movement facility in Lacombe, and was created after a 2011 car accident left the organization’s inspiration, Jason Lunn, in a wheelchair.

“Our two teams consist of around 30 incredible athletes, ages eight and up, with varying abilities, who are passionate about para hockey,” the organization says in a release.

“Beyond the ice, they are working or going to school and are learning invaluable life skills that help them become leaders in our community. Their dedication demonstrates the positive power of sport for people of all abilities, driven by perseverance and hard work. Please come out and cheer us on.”

Featured at the tournament is a free Sledge Hockey Try It session, Oct. 25, from 12:30 to 1:30. Similar sessions will be offered throughout the season.

There will also be a raffle and silent auction, with volunteers also taking monetary donations.

The Team Jigger Foundation also has sponsorship packages available. They note a sled and set of sticks costs about $1,000.

More information about the foundation is at teamjigger.com. You can also contact Ray Wasdal about the tournament, including about donating raffle prizes, at 403-318-3623.
