AWAITING RESULTS FOR RED DEER

Cindy Jefferies to become mayor of Red Deer, plus election results from around central Alberta

Oct 20, 2025 | 11:57 AM

It’s the day after municipal elections happened across Alberta, and results continue to come in.

The Alberta government enacted a new rule for municipal elections this year that prohibits electronic vote counting.

Ballots are therefore being counted by hand, which has created delays in results coming in.

The City of Red Deer, for example, had said results would not be reported Monday evening with the first update expected Tuesday at 4 p.m.

However, other municipalities in central Alberta are reporting results (see below).

Oct. 21 statement from City of Red Deer

QUESTION: Why are results from other Alberta municipalities being announced sooner than Red Deer’s?
“Every municipality across Alberta is hand-counting ballots this year, but the time it takes can vary depending on how ballots are structured and how races are organized.
“In Red Deer, voters elect a mayor, eight city councillors, and both Public and Red Deer Area Ward Catholic School Trustees – all using at-large systems. This means every voter can vote for multiple candidates in each of these races, rather than just one representative from a ward. As a result, each ballot includes many selections, making the counting process more detailed and time-consuming.
“Our team uses a proven manual counting method called the Kangaroo Board for these multi-contest races. It’s accurate but meticulous – every ballot is reviewed by two election workers and verified by a supervisor. Municipalities that use ward systems or have fewer contests to count can often complete their tallies faster, simply because they’re counting fewer races per ballot.
While our process takes a bit longer, it ensures that every vote is counted carefully and transparently before results are released. We aim to have more information later today!”
