A Red Deer woman has been honoured for her community work.

On Friday, MADD Canada announced Yvette Kalan as the recipient of the 2025 Volunteer of the Year award for her work with the MADD Red Deer & District Chapter.

Kalan has volunteered with the chapter for 26 years following the tragic loss of her daughter, Sherri-Jean Kalan, who was killed by an impaired driver in 1996.

Her daughter was just 18 years old at the time, having graduated from high school and was preparing to go to college.

Since then, Kalan has raised awareness about the consequences of impaired driving and has supported other victims and survivors. She’s also advocated for safer roads through the Red Deer chapter’s ongoing initiatives and supports.

“Yvette’s courage and compassion exemplify what it means to be a MADD Canada volunteer,” said Tanya Hansen Pratt, MADD Canada national president. “Her dedication over nearly three decades has made an incredible difference in her community and in the lives of countless families.”

The Volunteer of the Year Award is handed out annually at MADD Canada’s Chapter Leadership Conference.

The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment, leadership, and compassion through their volunteerism in pursuit of MADD Canada’s mission to stop impaired driving and support victims of this violent crime.
