Lyn Radford invested into the Alberta Order of Excellence

Red Deer’s Lyn Radford has received the province’s highest honour.

On Thursday afternoon, Radford joined eight other Albertans at the investiture ceremony, where she was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence at the Government House in Edmonton.

Radford has brought numerous world-class sporting events to the community and helped tackle homelessness.

Some of the large events brought to central Alberta include the 1998 Alberta Winter Games, the 2004 and 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the 2006 Alberta Summer Games, the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay Celebration, the 2013 inaugural Tour of Alberta Cycling Race, and the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

She also sat on the board of Speed Skating Canada and serves on Red Deer’s Task Force for Homelessness.

In a previous story from earlier this year, when it was first announced, she told rdnewsNOW she was shocked to find out she was named to the Alberta Order of Excellence.

“It was never in my realm of imagination that the work that I’ve done would be recognizable at this level. It’s like there’s a big pond out there, and I didn’t see myself as a piece of the big pond,” Radford said.

“I’m so appreciative for the people who nominated me. I really value that they see something in me that I hadn’t seen in myself. I want to thank the community of central Alberta for giving me opportunities to help make life better for many people and change our community to a more positive place.”

This year’s inductees brought the Alberta Order of Excellence’s total membership to 229. Established in 1979, the Alberta Order of Excellence is the province’s highest honour and is an official part of the Canadian Honours System.
