Thousands raised in benefit of Red Deer Soup Kitchen and Innisfail Food Bank

Two local food programs received a recent boost thanks to funds raised by a local resident with help from the Penhold & District Optimist Club.

Thanks to donations from 14 local businesses, Kim Kim was able to raise $3,335 for the Innisfail Food Bank and the Red Deer Soup Kitchen.

Kim Kim of the club said that after volunteering at the soup kitchen, she noticed that there were a lot of people who were utilizing the service.

With food costs as high as they are, Kim decided to ask local businesses to donate in support of the food bank and soup kitchen.

In exchange, she gave each donor homemade bracelets, necklaces, and bookmarks.

“I come from a very poor family in an orphanage, and I know what hunger is like. I came to Canada after I was adopted, and I’m so blessed,” she said. “I’ve volunteered at the food bank here and there and the soup kitchen for 30 years… To me, you come into this world with nothing, and you’re going to leave with nothing. When I volunteer at the soup kitchen, I see more and more people because the cost of living is higher.”
