Rebels unable to complete comeback in 3-2 loss to Canes

Oct 7, 2025 | 10:17 PM

Following the Red Deer Rebels’ third straight loss on Tuesday night, head coach Marc Habscheid called on his older players to step up their game.

His remarks came after a 3-2 setback to the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Centrium. As a result, they’ve fallen to 1-5 so far this season, which is good enough for 10th place in the Eastern Conference.

“I thought the last half of the game we were better. In the first half, we ran into penalty trouble, and they got us on our heels. By the time we got our feet under us again, we were chasing the game, and then we brought it back 2-1… We made it close, but we kind of shot ourselves in the foot,” he said.

“The other thing is, especially in junior hockey, you know you have age differences and a lot of times you need your best players to be your best players, and I didn’t think that happened tonight.”

Red Deer had a slow start to the game, recording just four shots in the opening period. Despite stronger second and third periods to finish the game with 31 shots, the Rebels were unable to complete the comeback.

“Even when we changed momentum, it was our depth that changed the momentum for us,” he said. “We need our best players to be better for us. This is probably the first game, which I wasn’t happy with that but you go through that in a season, and I’m sure they’ll be better the next game.”

The first goal of the game came with 3:50 left in the opening period when forward Kade Duell scored in tight from the left side of the net.

A minute later, rookie Tyden Lafournaise extended the Hurricanes’ lead to 2-0 as the forward notched his first Western Hockey League goal.

The Rebels responded in the second period with 13 shots, including a goal by Slovakian defenceman Matus Lisy. The rookie scored his first WHL goal with 6:21 remaining in the middle frame.

However, in the third period, the Hurricanes restored their two-goal lead with 12:46 remaining in the game.

Hurricanes forward Logan Wormald scored near the bottom of the right circle to make it 3-1 for Lethbridge. After his initial shot was blocked by a defender, he followed up and fired another shot that surprised Rebels goaltender Chase Wutzke, who lost sight of the puck after it was blocked.

The Rebels didn’t go away quietly. They answered with 7:49 remaining scored by forward Ty Coupland, who buried an opportunity from the left side of the net, assisted by Samuel Drancak.

Despite pulling the goalie in the final minute, Red Deer was unable to find the equalizer. Goaltender Chase Wutzke made 24 saves on 27 shots and Hurricanes netminder Koen Cleaver made 29 saves on 31 shots.

The Rebels will look to get back on track this Friday when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Centrium at 7 p.m.

They’ll then head to the Lethbridge on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a rematch with the Hurricanes.
